Creativity, extends far beyond the realms of art and literature, I would argue, and so does the more recent research that, in fact, it is a fundamental aspect of human life that influences our psychological wellbeing in profound ways.

Ryff's model of psychological wellbeing, a well researched model in the positive psychology field,  includes six core dimensions, I find it is a helpful framework to understand how creativity contributes to our overall sense of happiness and fulfillment when the ‘wellbeing’ focus is too often on just the physical aspect of wellbeing.

These dimensions are self-acceptance, personal growth, purpose in life, environmental mastery, autonomy, and positive relations with others. So what are these dimensions and how does creativity touch each of these..

1. Self-Acceptance

Self-acceptance is about acknowledging and embracing all facets of oneself, including strengths and weaknesses. Creativity plays a crucial role in supporting self-acceptance. Engaging in creative activities such as writing, cooking, gardening or music allows individuals to express their true selves and explore their inner worlds. This expression can lead to a better understanding and appreciation of one's unique identity and experiences.

Creative endeavors provide a non-judgmental space where one can confront and accept their vulnerabilities. For example, journaling can be a therapeutic exercise, helping individuals to process emotions and gain insight into their behaviors and thoughts. This reflective practice promotes self-awareness and compassion, key components of self-acceptance.

2. Personal Growth

Personal growth is the continuous process of developing one's abilities and understanding of the world. Creativity is inherently tied to growth as it encourages curiosity, learning and the pursuit of new ideas and experiences. When people engage in creative activities, they often step out of their comfort zones, try new things, and challenge themselves to think differently.

Creativity stimulates intellectual growth by encouraging problem-solving skills and innovation as they usually require patience, practice, and a willingness to learn from mistakes. This process enhances cognitive flexibility and resilience, contributing to ongoing personal development.

3. Purpose in Life

Having a sense of purpose involves feeling that one's life is meaningful and directed. Creativity helps individuals to find and pursue their passions, which can provide a profound sense of purpose. When people engage in creative activities, they often feel a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment that transcends the activity itself.

Creative pursuits can also align with broader life goals and values, giving individuals a sense of direction and meaning. This alignment of creativity with personal values enhances the sense of living a purposeful life.

4. Environmental Mastery

Environmental mastery refers to the ability to effectively manage life and the surrounding world. Creativity equips individuals with the skills to adapt and thrive in various environments. Creative problem-solving is a key aspect of environmental mastery, enabling individuals to navigate challenges and make the most of available resources.

In addition creativity encourages a sense of agency and control over one's environment. When individuals engage in creative activities, they often take initiative, make decisions, and influence their surroundings in meaningful ways.

5. Autonomy

Autonomy is the capacity to make independent choices and act according to one's own values and interests. Creativity nurtures autonomy by encouraging self-expression and individuality. When individuals engage in creative activities, they often explore their preferences, experiment with new ideas, and develop a unique voice.

Creative activities provide a platform for individuals to assert their independence and resist conformity and this autonomy enhances self-confidence and reinforces one's ability to make decisions and pursue personal goals.

6. Positive Relations with Others

Positive relations with others are characterized by meaningful and satisfying connections with people. Creativity fosters social connections by providing opportunities for collaboration, communication, and shared experiences. Engaging in creative activities, whether in a group or individually, can bring people together and strengthen bonds.

These experiences help individuals to understand and appreciate diverse perspectives, fostering deeper and more positive relationships and sharing creative work or experiences with others can create a sense of community and belonging.
